The Challenge
In the face of climate change and increasing pressure from human activities, the client needed to evaluate the adequacy of available water resources across its territory. The objective was to assess whether current and future water needs—for domestic use, irrigation, livestock, and energy—could be sustainably met. This required a comprehensive understanding of both the spatial distribution of water demand and the evolving availability of resources under various climate scenarios.
The Solution
Tractebel conducted a detailed feasibility and planning study, beginning with a full inventory of water resources and consumption patterns across all municipalities. The team analyzed current and projected climate data to assess future water availability and demand. Using this information, Tractebel developed a water shortage index for multiple time horizons, enabling a clear visualization of potential mismatches between supply and demand. The study also included scenario modeling and geospatial analysis to support strategic planning.
The Impact
The project enabled the identification of the most vulnerable territories and water uses, providing a data-driven foundation for targeted adaptation strategies. By highlighting areas at risk of water stress, Tractebel helped the client prioritize investments and policy actions to enhance resilience. The study supports long-term water resource planning and contributes to sustainable development by aligning infrastructure and land use with future climate and demographic realities.
