The Challenge
With changing hydro-climatic conditions and increasing pressure on water resources, the client needed to reassess the operation of an existing reservoir to ensure continued flood protection for downstream populations. The challenge was to evaluate whether current operational modes remained adequate under future climate scenarios, while also balancing competing water uses such as domestic supply, agriculture, livestock, and energy production.
The Solution
Tractebel conducted a comprehensive hydrological review, incorporating updated climate projections and water usage data. The study involved defining key performance indicators (KPIs) tailored to the client’s objectives, verifying the alignment between water availability and demand, and simulating various reservoir operation modes. A multi-criteria analysis was performed to compare scenarios, integrating technical, environmental, and socio-economic factors to support informed decision-making.
The Impact
The project resulted in updated river flow statistics and a refined understanding of water availability under future conditions. By identifying more resilient operational strategies, Tractebel helped reduce the vulnerability of water users and enhance the adaptability of the reservoir system. The proposed modifications to reservoir management will ensure sustained flood protection and more efficient water allocation in a changing climate.
